The town of Orvieto was actually created from the soft volcanic rock from which it’s sits, as the Romans, then the Etruscans and everyone who followed dug into the tufa and over the centuries by doing so created over 1,000 cisterns, caves, secret passages and storage for wine and olive oil underground. At the heart of the Medieval quarter of Orvieto there is a fascinating underground labyrinth of passages, with caves and archaeological finds, all discovered fairly recently after centuries of neglect. Marmore Falls

The amazing Marmore falls are just 8 kilometers from Terni and can be reached by either of the two roads east of the city, one leading to the upper road, or “Superiore”, and the other that takes you to the lower road, or “Inferiore”. Cascata dell Marmore is in fact a man made water fall and at 541 feet is the highest in all of Europe. The falls were created by the Romans in 271 BC when they diverted the River Velino into the Nera to prevent flooding of local agricultural land. Read More
Umbertide

This large town in northwestern Umbria is 30 kilometers north of Perugia and sits at the point where the Reggia flows into the Tiber River. The town one of Umbria’s largest is of ancient origin, dating back to the 6th century BC. Although there are remains of the medieval walls, a few medieval houses, and part of the Rocca, or citadel, many of Umbertide’s best monuments are of later periods. Unfortunately the town suffered severe destruction during World War 2, and is considered an industrial town producing machine tools, farm machinery, ceramics and other products. Read More
